NIKE and Zellerfeld Introduce 3D Printed Air Max 1 ‘1000’ at ComplexCon 2024

November 19, 2024

NIKE and Zellerfeld have unveiled a reimagined version of the iconic Air Max 1, named the Air Max 1000, during ComplexCon 2024 in Las Vegas. This collaboration combines NIKE’s legacy of innovation with Zellerfeld’s expertise in 3D printing to create a sneaker that merges cutting-edge manufacturing techniques with the timeless Air Max silhouette.

A New Era for Air Max

The Air Max 1000 incorporates NIKE’s signature Air technology, featuring an airbag in the heel for soft cushioning to protect the wearer’s footing during movement. Complementing this cushioning are Zellerfeld’s 3D-printed honeycomb-structured midsoles, designed for added support and flexibility. The shoe also utilizes breathable materials, ensuring comfort and performance in both casual and athletic settings.

In keeping with Zellerfeld’s innovative approach, the Air Max 1000 is custom-fitted to the wearer’s feet using advanced scanning technology before being 3D printed. This process ensures a precise fit, providing enhanced comfort and eliminating the need for standard sizing.

Continuing the A.I.R Legacy

The debut of the Air Max 1000 may mark the next chapter in NIKE’s A.I.R (Advanced Innovation and Reimagination) series, initially introduced in Paris ahead of the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics. This series represents NIKE’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of manufacturing and design.

“It’s control, times precision, times expression — all of which are vital to sport and to design,” explains John Hoke, NIKE’s Chief Innovation Officer.

Showcasing Innovation at ComplexCon

ComplexCon 2024, held November 16–17, offered visitors a glimpse into the future of NIKE’s Air technology. Attendees explored prototype designs that highlight the brand’s commitment to innovation, including historic units developed by Frank Rudy, the inventor of NIKE’s Air cushioning technology. This showcase demonstrated the evolution of the Air Max line and its potential future directions.

A Collaborative Vision

While no official plans for a public release of the Air Max 1000 have been announced, the collaboration between NIKE and Zellerfeld exemplifies the possibilities of combining advanced manufacturing with footwear design. In parallel, Zellerfeld continues to expand its portfolio of custom 3D-printed sneakers. Customers can now reserve personalized designs (excluding the Air Max 1000), with production beginning after a foot scanning process to ensure a perfect fit. Deliveries are expected to start in March 2025.
