Global Partnership to Develop Space Propellant Tanks Using Additive Manufacturing

August 22, 2024

Innovative Space Carrier Inc (ISC), based in Japan, has formed a strategic partnership with WAAM3D, Cranfield University, and Aichi Sangyo to advance the development of propellant tanks for space transportation systems. This collaboration is poised to accelerate ISC’s goal of creating reusable space transport vehicles within five years, utilizing cutting-edge Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology.

Advancing Space Technology Through Collaboration

ISC, founded in May 2022, is quickly emerging as a significant player in Japan’s space industry. By embracing the philosophy of “Wakon Yosai”—learning from both domestic and international partners with advanced expertise—ISC seeks to enhance its development process. The company is shifting to an agile development approach, which allows for faster iterations in design, manufacturing, testing, and optimization. Central to this strategy is the use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) machines, which will enable ISC to shorten manufacturing cycles, rapidly test components, and integrate manufacturing processes for more efficient production.

WAAM3D, a spin-off from Cranfield University, plays a crucial role in this endeavor. Known for its expertise in producing large, complex workpieces, WAAM3D will provide the necessary AM machines to ISC. These machines will help overcome challenges in shaping and heat control, allowing for the production of high-integrity propellant tanks. Dr. Filomeno Martina, CEO of WAAM3D, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “We are incredibly excited to work on such an ambitious project. With partners of such caliber, we look forward to pushing the boundaries of size, integrity, and value creation.”

Cranfield University contributes its extensive research experience in metal Additive Manufacturing, particularly through its Welding and Additive Manufacturing Center. The university’s work in material development and advanced processes will support ISC in achieving its ambitious objectives. Meanwhile, Aichi Sangyo, a pioneer in metal AM in Japan, will apply its expertise to develop and refine the manufacturing processes for ISC’s propellant tanks, integrating production machines, materials, and design for optimal results.

Building the Future of Space Transport

This collaboration between ISC, WAAM3D, Cranfield University, and Aichi Sangyo marks a significant leap forward in the evolution of space transportation technologies. By harnessing advanced Additive Manufacturing techniques, the partnership aims to accelerate the development and testing of propellant tanks, driving ISC’s mission to create reusable space transport vehicles and strengthening Japan’s presence in the global space industry.
